Simplified Configuration By Default
Policies arrive preconfigured with recommended settings rather than empty, which is a deliberate choice for organizations without a security specialist to tune them. The settings remain adjustable where a specific application needs an exception.
Windows, Mac, Mobile And Servers
Protection extends across Windows and macOS clients, iOS and Android devices, and servers, so the estate can be covered under one policy set rather than leaving the mobile fleet and the server room to separate products.

Built In Windows Protection Is Not The Same Thing
The naming is genuinely confusing, and the confusion costs organizations either money or coverage.
Antivirus Is Not Detection
The Defender antivirus included with Windows blocks known malicious files on that one machine. It does not record an attack chain, does not give you a console across the estate, and cannot investigate or remediate automatically. Those capabilities are the paid product.
Central Visibility Changes The Job
Without a management console there is no way to ask whether a threat seen on one laptop appeared anywhere else. Answering that question is most of what incident response consists of, and it is impossible with per-device protection alone.
Paid For, Not Enabled
Organizations on Microsoft 365 Business Premium already hold this licence. It is common to find it unconfigured, with devices unenrolled and no policies applied, which delivers none of the protection being paid for every month.
When This Is The Right Answer, And When It Is Not
A Strong Fit
Organizations already committed to Microsoft 365, particularly those on Business Premium who are paying for it regardless. The integration with the rest of the tenant is genuine, and the economics are hard to argue with when the licence is already held.
Look Elsewhere If
You are approaching three hundred seats, you run a substantially non-Microsoft estate, or you need a managed service rather than a product. This is software that still requires somebody to watch it, and if nobody will, a managed detection service is the more honest purchase.
